Description

Position:  Night Custodian

 

Hourly Wage:  $19.60 - $22.65

 

Statement of Duties: Responsible for the overall cleanliness, sanitation, security, safety and maintenance of the assigned facilities, buildings, grounds and equipment. Employee monitors supply and equipment inventories, facility rentals, and HVAC systems within the school facility.

 

Chain of Command: Employee works under the general supervision of the Night Foreman and/or Head Custodian. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:  Employee is responsible for the regular supervision of all part-time custodians located at the assigned facility.

 

Employment Environment: Working conditions may involve occasional exposure to loud noises or a combination of unpleasant elements such as odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease.  Duties include work under conditions when outdoor weather conditions are poor.  Work may involve general cleaning, occasional work at heights or in confined or cramped quarters, or work around machinery and its moving parts.  Work may also involve completing several unrelated tasks within a relatively short period of time.

 

Occupational Personnel Risks:  Essential jobs functions regularly present the potential risk for injuries, which could result in loss of time from work.  Examples of injury include burns from chemicals, fire, severe muscular strains from working with heavy materials and/or cleaning equipment, falls from heights in excess of three feet and illness from exposure to communicable diseases.  Special safety precautions, training, or protective clothing such as gloves, glasses, and safety footwear may be required.

 

Miscellaneous Job Functions:

  1. Responsible for covering events outside normal business hours. These listings will be listed in the calendar on the SchoolDude software that is utilized throughout the district.

 

  1. Ensure safety and functionality of the school by setting up tables, chairs and trash receptacles. Remove trash, sweep and/or mop up spills and debris throughout the school. Clean the cafeteria following the lunch period by removing trash; breaking down tables and chairs; sweeping and scrubbing floors; and cleaning counters, sinks, walls and windows within the cafeteria.

 

  1. Perform cleaning and monitor the restrooms to ensure health and safety standards are upheld. Follow Universal Precautions and sanitation procedures when handling the cleanup of bodily fluid spills. Unclog plumbing and waste traps as needed.

 

  1. Prepares for meetings and events as assigned, coordinates with administrative staff to determine proper furniture arrangement, technical equipment required, or other needs required.

 

  1. Prepares room setups for graduations, town elections, school committee meetings, and other various events.

 

  1. Opens and closes buildings, ensures the security of buildings, closes and locks windows and doors, sets security alarms, and turns off lights.

 

  1. Removes snow, ice, leaves, dirt and debris from walkways and stairs to maintain safe entry into school buildings for visitors, staff and students. The employee may be required to report to work before, during, and after serious inclement weather.

 

  1. Submits School Dude requests for location when in need of supplies.

 

  1. Attends job training, as required by state laws and regulations.

 

  1. Change light bulbs as required.

 

  1. Paints throughout school buildings and properties, as assigned.

 

  1. Stocks and delivers paper supplies to offices.

 

  1. Strips, seals, buffs, and waxes floors within school buildings.

 

  1. Raises and lowers flags at school buildings for half-mast notifications.

 

  1. Assists departments with moving files and boxes.

 

  1. Assists in regulating heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures for the season.

 

  1. Responsible for conserving energy whenever possible, to include electricity, water, and fuel consumption.

 

  1. Reports all required maintenance repairs to the department head through the use of SchoolDude software or contacts their immediate supervisor directly if it’s an emergency..

 

  1. The employee may be directed to perform other duties, as required to meet the needs of the school district.

 

Education and Experience: Must have a High School diploma or equivalent, and one to three years experience in cleaning and custodial work.  Must have experience in snow removal, to include the operation of snow removal equipment.

 

Special Requirements:  A candidate for this position is required to have a valid Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

Physical Skills:  Work requires some agility and physical strength, such as moving in or about construction sites or over rough terrain, or standing or walking most of the work period.  Occasionally, work may require lifting heavy objects and carrying them.  There may be a need to stretch and reach to retrieve materials. 

Motor Skills:  Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination.  Examples may include operating a personal computer, driving a car, using power tools or climbing a ladder.

 

Visual Skills: Position requires routine reading of documents and reports.

 

Evaluation: Job performance will be reviewed annually. The employee will receive an annual written review of their performance by their immediate supervisor and the school’s principal. Reviews will be conducted in accordance with the School Committee’s policy on evaluation of non-professional personnel.

 

Terms of Employment: Position is twelve months per year.
